Mentor District Outlook

Meatgrinder No More?

The days of the “Mentor Meatgrinder” have passed.  However, it isn’t quite “Hamburger Helper” either.  29% of the wrestlers ranked in the top ten will exit the Mentor District, meaning that Mentor is “above average”.  This District has more “star power” than any other District thanks to Lakewood St. Edward’s “super six” of Sean Nemec, Chris Honeycutt, Collin Palmer, Brian Roddy, Shawn Harris, and Jamie Clark- all of whom are ranked #1 in the state.  So great is the shadow cast by St. Edward’s at Mentor this year that they could conceivably win 13 out of 14 weights (and are favored in 12 of 14). However, the depth (what matters for qualification purposes) does not even compare to that of Massillon Perry (though it is still greater than either Darby or Fairfield).

Best of the Best: Sean Nemec

While a case can be made for several of St. Edward’s stars, in the end, the only choice can be Sean Nemec. Nemec is a fluke loss away from having been St. Edward’s 3rd four-time state champion, and has been better than ever the 2nd half of the season.  With the possibly exception of his third straight state final with Derek Foore, Nemec won’t be tested again until the post-season.

Critical Quarterfinal:
The stakes of the quarterfinal between #10 Scott Lowe and #11 Zach Goins are very high.  The loser of that bout will most likely have #4 Thomas Graszl in the go-to-state match, while the winner of the bout will be favored in their semifinals or if they lose there, they will be a solid favorite in the go-to-state match as well.
