Hilliard Darby Outlook
Best of the Best: Brendon Barlow
Tough to go against Brendon Barlow. Barlow, has tasted defeat just once in the past two years, in what would be considered a fluke. He is not only among the best heavyweight in a great group in Ohio, but is among the best nationally as well. That said, he will have is hands full this weekend as he meets #3 Andy Hartshorn in the semifinals (in a rematch of last year’s state final) and most likely #4 ranked Antonio Jeremiah in the finals. Barlow’s compact build will present an interesting style matchup with the 6’8” Jeremiah.
If Barlow is the #1 wrestler in this District, state runner-up Michael Lybarger is 1-a.
The weight to watch:
Though heavyweight is outstanding (with the #1, #3, and #4 ranked wrestlers), I think the weight class to watch at this District will be 140 lbs. Lybarger looks to have the edge after winning Sectionals over Vaccari and Guy. Lybarger has a very aggressive style and scores a lot of backpoints- often with tilts from the top position. Besides Lybarger, two other state place-winners return at this weight (Vaccari, Guy) along with the very tough Messerall. Messerall and Guy are rated #8 and #9, but could easily be in the top six. The draw is situated that, barring a huge upset, all four should qualify. The action should heat up starting with the quarterfinals, when state placers Vaccari and Guy meet.
