Showtime: A Preview of Ohio’s Best District ![]() You can cut the tension with a knife. It’s an annual trial by fire for Northeast Ohio’s best: the Massillon Perry District. In a gymnasium that is way too small for the crowd it contains, the heat rises as the tension mounts with each passing round. Sure, you will have your marquee match-ups as always: Squire/Horner, Henry/Ciccarello, Spicel/Lang/Sheppard/Lijoi, Cogar/Rasho….but in truth, the finals will be anti-climactic. The real action at Districts has always been in those heart-wrenching consolation rounds- with seniors fighting to keep alive careers built with years of blood, sweat, and yes, tears. With weight classes containing 8-12 (or more) state-caliber wrestlers but only four berths to “the show”, plus local rivalries and log-standing grudges being decided once and for all, the intensity is second to none. Forget Squire/Horner- this weekend belongs to that Gasper/Creatore epic, the Crine/Kretz showdown, the matches where #8 meets #10 with the season hanging in the balance. With 38% of the top ten wrestlers hailing from the Perry District (compared to 27% for Perry, 22% for Fairfield, and 13%- not a typo- for Hilliard Darby) the margin for error could not be any slimmer for all but the truly elite. Ohio Wrestling Site Breaks down what fans can expect to see in Ohio’s premier District. 103 LBS PREVIEW OUTLOOK: Of the top 15 ranked wrestlers, ten of them will vie for just four spots at Perry, including six of the top eight. State Ranked wrestlers will match up from the first round on in a truly unpredictable weight class. The big story here is the inspirational Justin Toth of Painesville Riverside. Toth, as many of you know, has only one leg- but hasn’t let that stop him from defeating state placer Jerry Pasquale of Boardman (twice) and highly-regarded Shaun Ague of Austintown Fitch. Toth will meet #5 Nick Hannon of Perry provided he can get past #12 Zingale of Mayfield in the quarterfinals. Hannon defeated Toth in their last meeting, but Toth has a history of avenging losses including against Nick Brascetta of Graham (#3 Division II). Look for Toth’s magic to run out in the finals against the outstanding Korey Mines of Maple Heights, the one wrestler in this weight who can challenge #1 Sako in my view. Friday Night Fireworks: In as good of a first round bout as you will find all weekend, #5 Nick Hannon meets #6 Dan Chorney of Solon right off the bat. Chorney fell victim to a Sectional which had four of the top eight wrestlers in the state, where he fell to fourth place. Pasquale majored him for 3rd so it could be that I have him rated too highly. Hannon cuts hard to get to 103 as I understand and could be vulnerable in the first round. Falling into the consolation bracket early in a weight class with this many state ranked wrestlers would create a tough road to Columbus. #8 Jerry Pasquale, a returning state placewinner, meets #15 Alfredo Gray of Wadsworth in the quarterfinals. This match is key as the loser will likely face either Hannon or Toth in the dreaded “go to state” match. This is assuming that Gray can get past #16 Brian Hauser of Brush in the first round. Gray won the prior meeting with Hauser (at North Canton) by second period fall. However, the hot-and-cold Hauser can be outstanding at times, as shown by his wins over #11 Jack Young of Mentor and #12 (Division II) Jake Cramer of Oak Harbor. OWS Projected Finals: Korey Mines dec. Justin Toth OWS Projected Order of Finish: 1. Korey Mines (Maple Heights) 2. Justin Toth 3. Nick Hannon 4. Jerry Pasquale 5. Shaun Ague 6. Dan Chorney 112 LBS PREVIEW Outlook: Unlike 103, expect few surprises at this weight. A clear top three have separated themselves from the field in #2 Sammy White, #5 David Bolger, and #11 Leslie Polley. Defending state champion White- one of Ohio’s top juniors- meets Bolger in the semis, expect Bolger to come back strong for 3rd. Polley looks to be a finalist here, though #12 Zupanic and either #22 Zupko or Tony Bucca (#13 at 103) could knock him off. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS The quarterfinal match of Tony Bucca and Ricky Zupko could not be more crucial for either wrestler, with the loser likely to meet #5 David Bolger in their go-to-state match- and to get that far, this wrestler will likely have to defeat both #12 Zupanic and #15 Alex Gray of Wadsworth (who has the misfortune of facing White in the first round). The winner will advance to the semifinals where they stand at least a chance of upsetting Polley, and even if they lose, will likely face beatable #18-ranked Dan McNulty of Mayfield in their consolation semifinal. McNulty is solid (and has already pinned Zupko at Top Gun), but a much more desirable route to qualification than going through Gray, Zupanic, and Bolger. Bucca was expected to emerge as a top contender at 103 all year except that he never actually made it down there. However, he threw a big monkey wrench into this weight at the District Level by upsetting Zupanic of Barberton. This match will be a rematch from the Beast of the East, where Bucca defeated Zupko 3-1. OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Sam White major decisions Leslie Polley OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH: 1. Sam White 2. Leslie Polley 3. David Bolger 4. Dan McNulty 5. Zach Zupanic 6. Tony Bucca 119 LBS PREVIEW OUTLOOK: With four returning state placers here, and the next best wrestler (on paper) being #20 Tyler Feller, somehow, I had a feeling that the brackets could not fall in such a way as to allow all four state placewinners to qualify- so I almost fell out of my seat when I realized that in fact all four could and probably will qualify. Kyle Ciccarello of Brush has to like his draw, with the other three state placers on the other side of the bracket. In the other bracket, I look for Garrett Henry, 5th in Columbus last year in a very tough weight, to be the finalist. Frankly, it is very difficult to tell who wins between these two, but in their only prior meeting that I am aware of (their sophomore years), Ciccarello won by fall. With little else to go on, I am looking for Ciccarello to have the edge this weekend by the slimmest of margins. The “X” factor in this weight remains Ryan Marks of Brecksville. A state placer up a weight at 125 lbs. last year, his results this year since dropping to 119 have not been inspiring, but he has a history of putting together his best wrestling at the end. Marks is very tough on his feet, but look for Henry to have an edge on Marks on the mat. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS: #1 Garrett Henry faces state place-winner (8th) Mike Hillock of Perry in the quarterfinals Friday Night. Interestingly, Hillock also defeated top-ranked Henry two years ago at Perry (by a score of 7-1) so this is by no means a “no-brainer”. Clearly, Henry has vastly improved since then. The loser of this bout faces the underrated Tyler Feller of Hoover. Feller upset Hillock to win his Sectional. This assumes that Hillock makes it far enough to face Henry- he faces #18 (at 125) Mike Skilton of Mentor in the first round. OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Kyle Ciccarello dec. Garrett Henry OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH 1. Kyle Ciccarello 2. Garrett Henry 3. Ryan Marks 4. Mike Hillock 5. Tyler Feller 6. Waquiem Comar 125 LBS PREVIEW OUTLOOK: “And no good deed will go unpunished”. This has to be what Danny Foore of Wadsworth is thinking after looking at the pairings. After upsetting #5 Isaiah Chapman of Kenmore at Sectionals, he now has a relatively easy path to the semifinals as #20 Joe Spooner in the quarterfinals should be his toughest opponent. From there, the picture is bleak. Foore faces #2 Dan Genetin in the semis, and should he lose that match, will likely face either #4 Scott Mattingly or #6 Andrew Dinda of Garfield Heights, himself a 2x state placewinner. Meanwhile, Chapman, as Sectional runner-up, finds himself in a better spot. He can get to Columbus by defeating #9 Kretz in the quarters, losing his semifinal (which he could also very well win), and then facing an opponent ranked no higher than #16 in his “go-to-state” bout. Like at 119, four state placers (and six qualifiers) return here and six of the top 11 (and 13 of the top 25) wrestlers hail from this District (though several were casualties of incredibly tough Sectionals), while several other wrestler not ranked were rated in the Brakeman Report. Dan Genetin and Scott Mattingly seem to have an edge on the field and will likely continue their great rivalry, the most recent chapter of which went to Genetin. I am going with Genetin. History shows Genetin, seemingly always “huge” for whatever weight he is competing at, to be vulnerable in rounds shortly after weigh-ins but much less so in the finals. I look for him to win here just as he did in the Sectional finals. Mattingly will likely have to avenge a prior defeat to Chapman just to make the finals, however. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS: The match between returning state qualifiers Kevin Kretz and Chapman on Friday Night will be a huge bout. The winner (should they drop their semifinal to Mattingly) will likely face #16 Ricky Garrett or #20 Joe Spooner in their go-to-state bout, while the loser faces Foore, seemingly underrated at #11, only if they can defeat the loser of state placers Dinda and Mattingly. In other words, losing this match for Kretz or Chapman will mean that two state placers stand in their way of making a return trip to Columbus. Kretz won the only prior bout between these two that I am aware of, at the Bill Dies in 2007 (5-3 score). It’s crazy to think about- but Chapman may have to avenge not just one, but two defeats (the other being to Danny Foore) to advance to “the Schott” for a third time. OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Dan Genetin dec. Scott Mattingly OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH 1. Dan Genetin 2. Scott Mattingly 3. Isaiah Chapman 4. Andrew Dinda 5. Dan Foore 6. Ricky Garrett 130 LBS PREVIEW OUTLOOK: Five stars, four berths to Columbus is the story at this weight. Even worse, due to Garland McCormick getting upset in his third place bout at Sectionals, it appears that two of the five wrestler ranked among the top seven in the state here will not qualify. Five of the top seven ranked wrestlers will square off here for the top four spots, including three who already have a top three state finish to their credit. Brad Squire looks to avenge the only defeat of his career, at the hands of Seth Horner of Perry in the District Finals should both advance that far. The history of this rivalry is well known by now: Squire defeated Horner 8-4 at Ironman (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_f8kyRCeJs) , Horner handed Squire the only defeat of his career at the Mayfield Big Eight, and most recently, Horner defaulted to Squire early in the finals of Delaware Hayes after Squire bounced his head off the mat in a snap-down maneuver. So technically, Squire has avenged his loss, but I’m sure in his own mind he has yet to. Independent of his win over Squire, the brilliance of Horner was demonstrated by his 12-6 win over Joe Parra (3rd in state at this weight a year ago) and his Ironman triumph over former two-time cadet national champion Anthony Valles of Blair. Nevertheless, my pick here is Squire in a very close bout. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS Fireworks is putting it mildly. We start in the first round, where #5 Tom D’Alessandro and #6 Garland McCormick meet. Parra meets #13 Jerrell Hodge in the first round, and then faces #2 Seth Horner in the quarterfinals. And the Winner of the “Worst Draw in the State” Award Is……. Joe Parra. After facing #13 Hodge in the first round and #2 Horner in the quarters, assuming he loses to Horner, he then will likely have to defeat both #5 D’Alessandro and #6 McCormick to advance to state. Meanwhile, the best thing that could happen to the winner of the first round D’Alessandro/McCormick bout would be for them to lose their second round match. A loss in this round would mean they were likely to face Ben Welsh of Stow rather than Parra in their “go to state” bout. ![]() OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Brad Squire dec. Seth Horner OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH: 1. Brad Squire 2. Seth Horner 3. Joe Parra 4. Ben Welsh 5. Tom D’Alessandro 6. Jerrell Hodge 135 LBS PREVIEW OUTLOOK: The theme of this weight class is “long overdue”- for their first trip to Columbus, that is. There are a number of competitors here who were good enough to qualify last year, but fell short in loaded weight classes- notably, Zack Cline, Jeff Liggitt, Brad Benedict, and Wes Price. Most should qualify, but with #3 Mike Mencini in this weight, at least one of the above will not. Mencini first qualified for state as a freshman at 125 lbs., and it is difficult to believe he has not placed in Columbus yet. That will almost certainly change this year, and he is possible finalist following a season in which his only loss is to Jordan Thome, one of the top contenders in Division III. Look for him to win a series of close but controlled bouts here. My feeling is that Price is once again the “odd man out”, as he projects to face the loser of a Liggitt/Cline semifinal, should both win tough quarterfinal matchups. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS The action heats up in the quarterfinals, when #3 Mencini meets #16 Price, #8 Liggitt meets #20 Puskas, and #10 Cline meets #17 Benedict. Ironically, losing the quarterfinals isn’t so bad for the prospects for wrestlers in the bottom half of the bracket, as it means they will likely face one of the four solid but unranked wrestlers in the top quarter-bracket, as opposed to Price, in their crucial consolation semifinal. OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Mike Mencini dec. Jeff Liggitt OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH 1. Mike Mencini 2. Jeff Liggitt 3. Zack Cline 4. Brad Benedict 5. Wes Price 6. Louden Gorden 140 LBS PREVIEW Outlook: 140 is the marquee weight class in Division I this year, as many of the Ohio’s top middleweights have sought refuge from Collin Palmer and Tony Jameson at that weight. Four of the top five ranked wrestlers will be competing in this District, which may be as tough as the infamous 135 lb. weight was here a year ago (Jameson, Spicel, Habat, Clopton) Fortunately, the stars are aligned so that these four wrestlers- all with a top five state finish to their credit- should advance to Columbus. At the present time, two wrestlers with wildly contrasting styles seem to have ever-so-slightly separated themselves from the field. Former state champ and returning state runner-up Richie Spicel is powerful and virtually impossible to get an opening on. With his patented fireman’s being good for a takedown in virtually every bout, he is the consensus favorite in this superb weight class. On the other hand, Kyle Lang is one of the most exciting competitors this state has to offer. One year after his unbelievable consolation run which saw him dismantle Dan Genetin, Steve Mitcheff, and Scott Mattingly on his way to the bronze, he has moved all the way up to 140 lbs. and been even better. Among the great wrestlers he has won big over are Jordan Thome (16-4) and most recently Will Sheppard (16-1). He also owns an 8-5 win over state champ Aaron Sulzer. The prior two bouts between the lightning-fast Sheppard and Lang were an overtime win for Lang and a 4-3 win for Sheppard so the technical fall seems out of place, but- that’s Lang, he has a unique ability to put great opponents to their backs in situations that few others would even see an opportunity in. While Spicel remains my favorite to win in Columbus, I’m taking Lang on the grounds that it’s going to be tough to beat him three weekends in a row. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS: After the big four there is a major drop-off at this weight. The best match-ups on Friday looks to be Will Sheppard’s relatively tough road. Sheppard faces #18 Meenan of Wooster in the first round and #19 Schreiner of Mentor in the quarters. ![]() OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Kyle Lang dec. Richie Spicel OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH 1. Kyle Lang 2. Richie Spicel 3. Will Sheppard 4. Jared Lijoi 5. Chuck Meenan 6. John Schreiner 145 LBS PREVIEW Outlook: While Tony J. has by and large cleared out the elite competitors from this field in his pursuit of a fourth state title, a very deep field remains in this District (while the other three Districts are frankly terrible at this weight). 8 of the top 14 and 13 of the top 23 exit the Perry District, minus a few Sectional casualties, while there are several other unranked wrestlers who can beat the ranked contingent. In fact, there is so much parity in this field that there are only two wrestlers among the sixteen that I would be actually surprised to see quality. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS: You can throw the rankings out the window, at this weight, the difference between #9 and #20 is almost none. In the first round, we will see: #8 Rhoades vs. #19 Adkins, #9 Sheppard vs. #12 Brenner (the “rubber match” of two prior bouts which they have split), and #1 Jameson vs. #18 Linden. Provided the rankings hold up, in the quarters things really heat up as #18 (at 152) Haxton meets #14 Schreiner, #10 Wiggins squares off with #1 Jameson, #6 D’Alessandro meets #11 Williams, and #8 Rhoades meets either #9 Sheppard or #12 Brenner. In a weight class with so many evenly-matched wrestlers, winning these early round bouts will be key- as it will be difficult to string together several consolation wins in a row. ![]() OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Jameson technical fall D’Alessandro OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH 1. Tony Jameson 2. Mike D’Alessandro 3. Chad Rhoades 4. Matt Haxton 5. Charlie Williams 6. Jamar Sheppard 152 LBS PREVIEW Outlook: Expect few surprises here. The “big three” are #2 Heflin, #7 Greco, and #9 Jindra- all three should qualify with ease, and I expect the funky Heflin to redeem last year’s Perry flameout by winning in the finals over Jindra in convincing fashion. The battle looks to be for the final spot. Nick Demarinis is a returning qualifier at this weight, and despite an inexplicable loss to Dan Jacobs in his Sectional I expect him to turn it up and grab the fourth spot. The road won’t be easy, however. Previously unknown David Doyle of Brunswick stepped it up at Sectionals, winning 12-7 over #14 Matt Rowe in the finals after a semifinal 11-2 major over Ryan Harris of Kenmore. Doyle’s season has been solid but unremarkable before last weekend (including a 10-6 loss to Harris) so it is difficult to say if his Sectional performance reflects him reaching a new level, or is the proverbial “flash in the pan”. The winner is likely to face either Rowe or #16 DeAnte Russ in their go-to-state match. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS As previously mentioned, Demarinis and Doyle meet in the quarterfinals. The stakes of this bout are huge, as the loser likely faces #7 Lou Greco in their consolation semifinal bout. Rowe and Russ face uphill battles against Heflin and Greco, respectively. ![]() OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Nick Heflin dec. David Jindra OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH 1. Nick Heflin 2. Dave Jindra 3. Lou Greco 4. Nick Demarinis 5. David Doyle 6. Matt Rowe 160 LBS PREVIEW Outlook: This is hands-down the least competitive weight in the Perry District. The highly athletic Billy Calhoun looks to be the favorite here with Ethan Taylor a likely runner-up. I have no idea where Cuyahoga Falls wrestles in-season, but clearly, the unranked Taylor is the best wrestler that I missed in Division I (almost missed by Brakeman), as he backed up his 28-1 record with an 8-5 win over #9 Rhodes. Tylan Coleman is an interesting story here. The former 2x junior high state third-place finisher has missed nearly the entire season, but won his Sectional with a 5-1 triumph over #25 Josh Kovach. He enters with a 6-1 record, but in a weight this light he has a decent shot at qualification. Coleman has a bright future, as does the resurgent Mayfield program as it is chalk-full of quality underclassmen. Of course, this is head coach Frank Cikach’s final season after 35 years at the helm. FRIDAY NIGHT FIREWORKS: Fairly limited, but Coleman against #9 Rhodes will be a key bout. Rhodes defeated Coleman 6-3 in the NOC Finals, but when you are a freshman who has missed nearly the entire season, just these few weeks of experience could make a tremendous difference. OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Billy Calhoun dec. Ethan Taylor OWS PROJECTED ORDER OF FINISH 1. Billy Calhoun 2. Ethan Taylor 3. Darren Rhodes 4. Josh Pankewicz 5. Tylan Coleman 6. Josh Kovach 171 LBS PREVIEW ![]() OWS PROJECTED FINAL: Cody Lamberg dec. Dominic Jontony Please feel free to comment on this article on the message forum!
